However, a few weeks later, when the ship translates from the Warpthe poorly-maintained Geller field fails for an instant — just long enough to let a mischievous Daemon cxin on board and possess the body of one of the bridge servitors.
I can not wait for the next book whi I managed to read the entire book in one go, It took me about eleven hours if I remember correctly. One of the better Ciaphas Cain novels so far.
Cain adds that he has also sent a discreet message to Amberley Vailand that a detachment from the Bone Knives Space Marine chapter is also on its way. Feb 22, Gavin Gates rated it liked it. Worth a read if you like a more human element in your 40K novels.
Heading back cautiously, they find the Ork vehicles abandoned, and the orks gone without trace. My only complaint was that I would have loved to hear a better description of them from Cain.
Ciaphas Cain is a series I will continue to purchase the remainder of, especially since it has credibility to burn with me.
Looking around, he is horrified to see hundreds, if not thousands, of still-dormant Tyranids lodged in the ice. I hope to see some of the new characters in future Black library novels. May 12, Jason Howerton rated it really liked it. I almost almost want to play 40K every time I finish one of these. Unfortunately, having the idea makes him the obvious choice to carry it out. Then, naturally, lasg goes to hell.
Seeking as ever to be as far from the fighting as possible he finds himself once again squarely in the cross hairs of his enemies. Feeling the thump of the barrels, the Mawloc senses food and swallows them all, just before an explosion guts it.
Cain is safe, though exasperated that he is now the hero of the hour yet again. Every bit of Caphas Last Ditch is a page turner, as I found when I finished the book and realized it was 5 am. Anyone unfamiliar to the adventures of Ciaphas Cain need only know that he is a self-serving, incredibly paranoid, skilled liar, who is happy to put as many bodies between him and the enemy as possible in order to save his own skin.
Cain and his regiment crash lands on the ice planet of Nusquam Fundumentibus yes, really when on their way to help the local garrison with a minor ork-problem. Other than that, I loved it. The pace is lively and never drags. But the Hive Ship on Nusquam has been there for at least a thousand years longer, which raises the disquieting possibility that the Tyranids have penetrated much farther into the galaxy than previously thought, and there is no telling how many other hidden hives are scattered around, just waiting for another fleet invasion to awaken them.
So decrepit in fact that it crash-lands. Joining the cast this time are an icy planetary governor and the inexperienced Commissar Forres, who starts off eager but wisens considerably throughout the course of the novel. Relying on speed and his natural sense of direction underground, Cain leads Jurgen on a snaking path away from the station, and finds a surface exit, emerging into safety just before the tunnel belches flame from the volcanic eruption. As usual, trouble finds Cain regardless of where he is or how he got there.
But when his ship crashes into the wastelands outside the capital it disturbs a far greater enemy, one which has lain dormant under the permafrost since long before the Imperium came to this world, and could now threaten the whole sector. This is the eighth book featuring Ciaphas Cain in order of publication, that is; chronologically it takes place sometine after Duty CallsCiaphas Laet, hero of the Imperium, is back, this time on the implausibly named frozen planet of Nusquam Fundumentibus. By a miracle, they have just enough thruster ability to make a controlled crash, creating a fair-sized lake of boiling water in the ice instead of a smoking hole.
